Pesticide Applicator Training Certification

Private Applicator is defined as a person who applies restricted-use (pesticide label identifies) pesticide to produce an agricultural commodity AND pesticides are applied on property that they own or rent, or their employer owns or rents. If an applicator does not meet both parts of the definition, they are considered commercial applicators.

Certification is required to purchase and use restricted use pesticides. Private certification is not intended for commercial applicators. Certification programs include three hours of instruction and administration of the test, provided by the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection. Permits issued are valid for five years.

Everyone that would like to become Private Pesticide Applicator certified must purchase a manual.
The cost is $43.00.

Learning the Material

Self Study – applicators purchase the manual, study independently and test at a designated County office or online through Pearson VUE.

Self-Paced Online Training – Canvas course takes approximately 3.5 hours to complete. Stopping/starting throughout is allowed.

Zoom Webinar Training – Registration costs $10 and must be completed in advance through the UW PAT Store.

In-Person Training & Tests – Registration costs $10 and must be completed in advance through the UW PAT Store.

Testing

Testing is offered at a designated County Extension offices or online through Pearson Vue.

*A 70% or higher on the exam is required for self-study.
*A 50% or higher on the exam is required for self-paced/training attended.

Extension Wood County offers testing by appointment.

Pearson Vue – Cost is $45.00 with a 70% passing requirement.
