Clean Sweep is an event held twice a year in Wood County for residents to dispose of hazardous waste. It is free for residents, with limits on material quantities.
Examples of materials that can be brought to Clean Sweep include fungicides, herbicides, insecticides rodenticides, drain cleaner, floor polish, metal cleaners, mildew cleaner, photography chemicals, pool chemicals, spot remover, gun-cleaning fluid, hobby materials, lacquer, lead-based paints, solvents, stripper, thinner, turpentine, varnish, wood preservatives, NiCad batteries, and automotive fluids such as brake fluid, degreasers, old fuel, transmission fluid.
Items not accepted at Clean Sweep include antifreeze, latex paint, motor oil, automotive batteries, electronics, explosives, fluorescent tubes, appliances, high pressure cylinders, and tires. A list of local recycling sites is available at https://www.co.wood.wi.us/departments/health/Doc/RecyclingGuide.pdf
Care should be used when transporting materials to the Clean Sweep event. It is advisable to line trunk compartments with plastic or place materials in a plastic bin to contain any spills. Additional safety precautions will be in place at this year’s Clean Sweep. Residents should load all materials in their vehicle’s trunk, pickup bed, or trailer. Materials will not be unloaded from the vehicle’s back seat or internal areas. While at Clean Sweep, participants are asked to remain in their vehicles.
All Wood County residents may participate in Clean Sweep. Each household may bring up to 5 gallons of liquid or 50 pounds of solid waste and farms may bring up to 200 pounds. If you have more than these amounts, contact Veolia at 262-875-7014 to make special arrangements.
The Clean Sweep program is funded through contributions from Wood County and the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection.
